Through a grant of £43,777, the Army Central Fund supported Army families attending SSAFA’s Short Break programme at the Calvert Trust in Exmoor. The funded places enabled families to access fully supported residential breaks at no cost, ensuring that financial barriers did not prevent participation. During the October 2024 Break, seven Army families took part, including parents and children with a range of additional needs and disabilities.
The programme combines accessible adventurous activities with structured family time in a supportive environment. Families participate in activities such as climbing, cycling and swimming, with adaptations to meet individual needs. Alongside shared experiences, families receive tailored support before, during and after the Break. Feedback from participants highlights improved family relationships, increased confidence and resilience, and stronger connections with other military families facing similar challenges.
Demand for these Breaks remains high, with applications significantly exceeding available places. By investing in specialist respite and community-based support, the Army Central Fund helps ensure serving Army families with additional needs can access time together in a safe, inclusive setting — strengthening wellbeing, connection and stability across the serving community.
