Capital grants

Investing in facilities that support Army life

The Army Central Fund provides capital grants for infrastructure and facility projects that improve the wellbeing of serving Army personnel and their families.

These grants support the development, refurbishment or enhancement of spaces that play an important role in daily Army life — from welfare facilities and community hubs to sports and training environments.

We focus on capital projects that:

  • Deliver clear and lasting benefit to the serving Army community
  • Improve access to facilities that support wellbeing, recovery and participation
  • Strengthen community cohesion and shared spaces
  • Address identified gaps in provision

As set out in our Grantmaking Strategy, we prioritise investment in projects that are retention-positive, inclusive and designed to deliver long-term impact.

Capital Grants

What we look for

Capital funding represents a significant, long-term investment. We therefore expect applications to demonstrate:

  • A clear and evidenced need for the project
  • Strong alignment with our charitable objectives and funding themes
  • A well-developed and deliverable proposal
  • Secured or planned contributions from other funding sources
  • A robust plan for ongoing maintenance and sustainability

We place particular emphasis on projects that focus on people rather than buildings alone, ensuring that facilities are actively used and deliver meaningful outcomes.

Who can apply

Capital grants are typically awarded to:

  • Army units and commands
  • Charities and non-profit organisations supporting the serving Army community

All projects must demonstrate a clear benefit to serving personnel and their families, whether Regular or Reserve, in the UK or overseas.

How the process works

Our application process is designed to be proportionate to the scale of funding requested. Applications for grants up to £250,000 are considered annually by the Army Central Fund Board. Those applications for grants over £250,000 follow a two-stage process, starting with an Expression of Interest (EOI) and followed by a full application, if invited. This staged approach ensures that significant investments are carefully assessed and aligned with strategic priorities.

A strategic approach to capital funding

Capital Grants form part of a wider, coordinated approach to supporting the Army community.

By investing in facilities alongside programme and welfare funding, we aim to ensure that the right environments are in place to support wellbeing, participation and connection across Army life.

We prioritise projects where our funding can add clear value — complementing public funding and the work of other charities, and helping to deliver lasting benefit.
